New maternity ward ready for use

The District Chief Executive of the Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo District, Philip N. Laari has handed over the maternity ward at the new district hospital in Bunkpurugu to the district Health directorate of the area.

The DCE commended the Japanese Embassy for responding to their call through the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGHSP) Scheme, adding that the facility will surely impact positively on maternal Health Care and help to achieve the Millennium Development Goal 4 and 5. The facility which is well furnished with beds and some modern equipment to ensure quality health attention for pregnancy and related maternal and child cases also has a fully furnished two bedroom semi detached Bungalow attached to it for the medical personnel.

He said Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo is one of the most deprived districts in the Country in terms of infrastructural development in all sectors of the district including health delivery. Hence the facility undoubtedly sets the tone for us to realize our dream of gradually upgrading the Bunkpurugu Health Centre to a District Hospital.

The DCE further explained that, as a result of the numerous infrastructure deficits in the Country, and the competing demand for these facilities to be supplied, government alone is unable to meet all the demands as expected as such private hands are required to meet these demands.

Mr. Laari added that the new maternal clinic will help reduce over reliance on the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu which is some distance away and become very inconvenient in times of pregnancy related complication and emergencies, resulting in deaths. "The government of Ghana under the Leadership of His Excellency President John Mahama through the Ministry of health is working very hard to address all challenges facing us in the health sector. It is my assurance and hope that with this facility at our disposal, all pregnancy related complication in the Bunkpurugu Health Centre will now belong to history" Mr. Laari added.

He commended the Chiefs and elders for the release of land for the Project and to MAATA-N-TUDU Association; an umbrella women’s organization operational in 21 districts in the three regions in the north for their contribution towards the project.

The Executive Secretary of MAATA-N-TUDU Association, Mr. Confidence Lanbongang expressed delight that finally the project has been completed and thanked the Bunkpurugu Chief for his personal interest and encouragement in this project.

The Japanese deputy Ambassador to Ghana said the project is meant to improve health delivery and other services to the good people of this district. It is believed that, the health directorate and the Assembly would work to ensure the sustainability of the project.

The Paramount Chief of the Bimoba Traditional Area, Naa Alhaji Abuba Nasinmong commended authorities for showing interest in the health of women by providing the facility.

Mr. Samule Prah, the District Health Director said the maternity ward would serve people beyond Bunkpurugu and assured to ensure proper use of the facility. He also pledged to work with the regional directorate to facilitate posting of staff to assist in the proper service delivery at the facility.
