The 91 bags of cocoa beans were intercepted in two separate operations within three days intervals.
Speaking to Ghanadistricts.com, District Chief Executive for Juaboso, Kingsley Asoa-Apimah said the driver of the vehicle conveying the first 41 bags which was intercepted at Patrickrom bolted away but the driver of the second vehicle conveying the 50 bags intercepted three days after the first is currently in police custody pending further investigations.
He said because Juaboso shares boundary with Ivory Coast, people have taken advantage of the price difference in the two countries to smuggle the cocoa means for sale in Ivory Coast.
According to him, the price of a bag of cocoa bean in Ivory Coast is almost GHs100.00 more than in Ghana and this entices people who are bent on making more profit to smuggle the product across the border.
However, the anti-smuggling team made up of police personnel and other trained individuals having been doing well to combat this crime against the state.
He said authorities will not rest until people stop smuggling the cocoa beans outside the country forgetting that a lot of investments go into ensuring farmers get good harvest.
Meanwhile, the DCE assured that the culprits will be prosecuted.
