Abura DCE hands over land for construction of fish market

A more suitable and convenient fish market is to be constructed at Moree in the Abura Asebu-Kwamankese District in the Central Region to enhance the sale of fish in the area.

District Chief Executive for the area, William Atta-Mends who handed over a one acre land for the construction of the market underscore the importance of the market, adding that being a fishing community, it is the hope of the assembly to liaise with   other stakeholders to improve infrastructure that will boost trading activities of their people. He said the market is in line with measure to reduce poverty in the area by empowering the people economically.


 The project is being financed by the Central Region Development Commission (CEDECOM), the body responsible for the implementation of the Regional Coordinating Council’s (RCC) development policy and programme with emphasis on private sector towards the sustainable economic development of the Central Region.

The project estimated at GHs700, 000.00 will include the construction of two-storey, thirty (30) lockable stores, thirty-five (35) sheds and a number of other ancillary facilities to provide the needed comfort to the traders.

Mr. Atta-Mends also disclosed that the project is expected to be completed by the end of the year, as such the contractor has been given 7days to mobilize and get to site.

When completed, it will solve the old practice of their fishmongers traveling to Mankessim and other markets to do business, and this will also help generate income for the assembly to execute more developmental projects.

He advised the people to cooperate with the contractors in order to meet the deadline for completion, and also urged the contractor to engage the services of the people in the community. 

The handing over ceremony was witnessed by stakeholders including chiefs, Chief Fisherman Nana Kwegya VII, market queens, assembly members, officials from CEDECOM and the officials from the District Assembly.
