DCE, Claver Kofi Lawson |
The Ketu North District is one of only eleven
districts in the Volta Region that have performed well in revenue mobilization
in 2013.
This was disclosed by Mr. William Akoto, Chief Local
Government Inspector in the Volta Region at a function in Ave-Dakpa.
The district shares this honour with the Ho, Hohoe,
Keta, Ketu North, Adaklu, Krachi West, North Tongu, South Tongu, Ho West, and
Afadjato South Municipal/District Assemblies.
When Ghanadistricts.com contacted the District Chief
Executive, Mr. Claver Kofi Lawson said the assembly looks forward to
doing even far better this year and initial performance shows they are on
course.
According to him, the major constraint to effective revenue
mobilization in the district has to do with people’s understanding and
appreciation of why they have to pay those taxes especially basic rates and
property rates. “To many of the residents, buildings bequeathed to them were
long constructed by their relatives who paid nothing on them so why now?” he
queried.
However, with intense sensitization of the people, they have
come to understand that that should have been the practice, except that it was
not being enforced until now. Additionally, experiences of those who travelled
to other places and faced similar situations helped to educate their friends of
the practice.
The DCE said the assembly will be introducing property rate
this year, and this will significantly boost assembly’s internal revenue to
provide them with the financial muscle to tackle a lot more developmental
challenges.
He was also happy measures put in place to curtail revenue
leakages are also working to their advantage.
